My friend has a hewlett packard desktop and lately it has been running very slowly. his folks are very computer illiterate so they do not have any sort of virus protection enabled on their pc. he recently downloaded spyware doctor from the google update pack and began to scan for viruses. after 25 minutes it found 614 infections. he clicked on fix all the computer stops running. he restarted it and now his computer will not go to the login screen. He really needs help with this since this is the only computer that he has access to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like it's gonna need reformatted you should not need the restore disk for this since HP's come with a restore partition that makes things so much easier , no looking for drives and such
when rebooting the pc push the f10 key to bring up the restore partition and follow the instructions

Reimage the drive. It's too infested to deal with.
do what dr. bucks said or just format the hard drive, re-install your operating system of choice, get anti-virus and anti-spyware, and maybe even anti-adware. Defragment your hard drive every few months at least to keep it running at its best,
