Windows, programs closing problems help!?

We recently got rid of the spyware message about the corrupt registry. We disabled Windows Messenger and I firewalled the computer using the Windows Internet Firewall. However, I still cannot run Spybot. I can't download a virus protection program. And Internet Explorer AND Firefox both randomly close down when I try to open certain pages. Should we reformat yet AGAIN and block these things before we reconnect to the net? Should we change our IP address? This is VERY annoying!

Ok, make sure and follow these directions exactly in order. I'm assuming you have a broadband connection to the internet.

1) Buy a broadband router from your local electronics store. Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Fry's, Comp USA, etc... will carry these. It doesn't matter if you buy a wireless or not (though there will be 1 extra step if you buy a wireless router). *This step is extremely important if you have broadband, as it will protect your computer from incoming attacks.

2) Hook up the router by following it's instructions carefully.

3) Back up any data you have (not entire programs, just the data) onto CD's, disks, or an external hard drive.

4) Reinstall Windows, making sure to completely reformat the hard drive when you do so (this is the only way you can really be sure a previous infection doesn't linger).
