500,000 Files!?!?!? Virus?

for about 2-3 weeks now my computer has been running slower and slower. im running norton and spysweeper for virus protection. norton has been sweeping for almost 24 hours straight, it says it has scanned over 500,000 files. i really dont have ANYTHING on this computer, is it normal to have that many files? also, when i bring my computer out of hibernate mode, and i have the screen with the little box and my name and it says like, "2 unread message, 2 programs running" if i leave that screen up. and dont go to the desktop, every 10 minutes or so the screen will blink . Im pretty sure its not suppose to. Anything I can do beside reinstalling??

Those 50 k file are files belonging to some program installed or if you have a mass web downloaders. Programs like dreamweaver install a lot of files which takes the anti virus program hours to scan.

use ccleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ to check whats installed on your computer .

I have only about 9 GB of my total hard disk used up, and still I have over 300,000 files. Surely you don't use less than 9GB, do you? The speed is affected by accumulation of temporary files in the computer and many other factors. Detailed instructions to speed up a computer may be found here:
