A co-worker brought his computer to me that is in very bad shape. It is loaded down with viruses (instinct says randsom ware, adware, and malware) and it has taken out the desktop, brought the processor to almost a stop, and is tearing down the memory. I put it in safe mode and got rid of a bunch of programs that were unnecessary to add a little life. It had no antivirus protection so I added AVG. Then loaded spybot search and destroy. The computer will not let spybot run completely due to errors, and it shuts down after being about 10% complete. Here is the spin...there was no restore points set, he has no recovery, reboot, or system discs at all, but I can connect to the internet on safe. It is on windows XP platform, and we have no XP disc either. I have a Dell 9400 and do not think that I can use it as a slave. ANY IDEAS? I am running out of ideasa quickly!

Sounds like you have to reformat. Try running spybot in safe mode as well as all your other anti viruses. Personally, when people bring me crap like that I usually just reformat and say good as new, because it is. Tell him to purchase a copy of xp, or vista because he sounds like the type of guy to need to be told no by a computer because he doesn't know how, and that will be that. Give him a crash course on netiquette, don't open forwarded emails with attachments that say "Funny Joke" or "I Love you" and just watch out for the basic do's and don'ts of the internet. Nothing else you can do.
Or have a laugh and boot him up with a linux distro.
