Help! My DVD burner is acting up.?

I bought an LG DVD burner with LightScribe.

It started off working fine. Then I tried watching DVDs with the installed software and the dvd would play then just suddenly stop and I wouldn't be able to play it again until i restarted the computer (it wouldn't read the DVD correctly after the movie stopped playing, even after taking out the DVD and putting it back in).

i thought it was a software issue and I bought a dvd decoder and then the movies would work. Then when i tried ripping dvds with DVD shrink (using AnyDVD to take off the copyright protection) it would analyze the movie fine but when trying to back it up to my hard drive it would start the process, then fail with a message something like "I/O device error". And after that it wouldn't even read the disc correctly until a restart.

SO basically, what could this be? a bad drive, dirty lens, motherboard issue (its IDE, not SATA). My motherboard is old and cheap, could there be an issue there? OR in the BIOS?

Cynthia ,Assume your dvd drive is fine , it is working ! First is your processor and ram up to grade (512 is not enough ram for a fast dvd drive) Try lowering your speed settings for read and write to the minimum (it will help with older computers.) Plug your hard drive into the primary ide connector on the mother board and your dvd drive into the secondary. Keep your jumpers on the drives the same, master -master or cable select-cable select ( cs) and connect your drives to the far end of the cable . Update your video drivers and then your mother board drivers. Go into bios and make sure your udma setting and ata settings for your dvd player is not higher than your hard drive. Changing the settings wont help if you refuse to buy a $2 watch battery from any drug store Uninstall dvd shrink and any dvd and all other copy software youve installed! Restart Install microsofts media player ten (not 11,theres issues with 11) and the newest version of java from adobe; their both free ,install easy media creator, nero or power iso (only one) then play a movie. If it plays well then its your copy software( dvd shrink and any dvd have issues)
