Anti-virus help?

I've been using Norton for 3 years and quite frankly i'm fed up with what it does to my computer, it insists that it updates every hour and runs a scan every time i boot up, try to cancel it makes the computer slow and unresponsive. It overheats my computer and does damage to it.

I have a 2 1/2 year old Compaq Presario V4000 and i want to know what anti-virus would stop making my computer lag and go unresponsive, while offering good protection to viruses.

Also, my sound isn't working very well, could i put this down to Norton aswel?

We moved a computer into our house and wanted to change virus protection.

It was working fine. instructions said to uninstall all other virus protection.

Now it is just as if the blue wire connection was not plugged in. We have tried resetting DI-604 router, restarting computer, etc. Don't know what else to try.

Nortons sux, it will make your PC run like crap.

Nortons and McAfee are resource hogs..uninstall them if you have them. (see tool below for Nortons)

Download the programs linked below. Install them. Update them. Scan your pc with them, and do so weekly.

If you have System Restore turned on, the Restore files may be infected, and trying to reinfect your pc. I turn off that feature, reboot to delete the files, then turn it on after a full system scan with AVG.

Turning off System Restore.

(right-click My Computer, Properties, System Restore tab, check the box to turn off System Restore on all drives.)

Restart your PC, and hold down the F8 key.

When you see the Boot Menu appear (black screen white letters), choose SAFE MODE.

Run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN with AVG.

I have a memory stick (1GB memory) and it had passwrod protection. I was getting sick off it because password protection doesn't work on my school's computer, so I asked my dad how to get rid of it. He told me to move all my files onto the hard drive and then format it.

So I did. But now my memory stick only has 9.49 MB of memory.

all hard disks have less than the amount they are. This is because they write a small amount of info for your and other computers allowing them to write to it. Without it it would not have writing capacity.

Ok it sounds like the area that was password protected was in a separate partition, and only left you 10MB, so when you formatted it, it only formatted what it could access.

Open control panel%26gt; administrative tools%26gt;computer management%26gt; disk management. Insert you USB drive and see if it shows up "partitioned" 10MB in one partition and 990MB in another that is not formatted. Delete all the partitions, and create on partition, then reformat.

If it only shows 10MB and nothing else, you may have to download the manufactures security program to unlock the rest of the thumb drive.

BTW what kind is it, manufacture and model?

One more question did you format the USB stick FAT or FAT32? It really does not mater with a 1GB as FAT can handle up to 2GB and FAT32 can handle over 2 GB. Just curious you didnt format it NTFS. And when you formatted it, does it only give you a 10MB Capacity?

Well, from my experience, Norton and Active Virus Shield are the best. Spyware doctor and Spybot Search and Destroy are both bull****! They don't remove hardly any viruses and their real time protection sucks. I would highly recommend AVG antispyware (fast scanning and real time protection.) Panda antivirus is also bull. Once a computer is infected with a trojan, Panda can't help you. In my opinion, Active Virus Shield is best( even better than Norton). It doesn't take up a lot of disk space and is rated #1 for a reason. AND ITS FREE!!!!! Never tried Avast, but i hear its good also.

lol well, you sort of answered your own question, but from my experience, I believe that AVG is the best anti virus around and would recommend it to anyone who needs a secure and trustworthy anti virus. One of my friends also told me that BitDefender is good for newbies, but I've never tried it, so I can't really say much about it.

Be glad you have a mom that cares. Does my PC have a virus?

Recently my computer is not wokring properly. When I turn it on, I can't click anything. I can move the mouse around but it doesnt click anything. I have to use my keyboard to move around.

Then when the desktop is loaded up, I am not able to click either. I opened the start menu using the keyboard but it disapperas after a few seconds. So I quickly clicked firefox to open it up and search for possible solutions. However once it is opened up, I cant type sometimes and if I do type, it loads different random screens at times. If I click on something on the left, nothing happens. 2 minutes later, something from the right side of the screen pops up.

I tried using the virusscan I have installed to remove it (if IT IS a virus). I used Earthlink's Total Protection control center. It didn't detect anything but some spyware and malware and thiefware. It removed those items. Still the problem isn't fixed. So I went to trend-micro's online virus scan but it didnt detect anything.

start your pc on on safe mode, run your anti virus software, then delete it including the games that you download if want. The reason why it cant be delete is it is running. You can also try stop it running by pressing ctrl+alt+del, then click on the process then click the name of the virus "if you know, just be careful", then click end process. You can now delete it or just run your anti virus. then delete it.

hi, adware is a disgusting and infamous virus. perhaps you can try Norton to remove the virus. but you need to pay for the software.

i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can disable all virus to run, because the virus can only run on IE.

besides, firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.

It sounds as if its the system board. Sometimes this happens and its the hard drive, however, in your case it may be one or both of them. If you machine is under warranty, have them replace it again.

Also, how much ram do you have? Are you using Vista? If so, you will need at least 2gig of ram for Vista to run properly.

I have the new FREE AVG 8 on my computer. The version that has virus and spyware protection. I'm led to believe I'm lucky to have found it, because apparently it's a difficult download to locate. I want to try both Avira and Avast (One at a time of course) to see if I think either is better than AVG8. But I don't want to risk not being able to find the free download again if I uninstall it. So, is there a way I can keep AVG8 on my computer while I test the other two out, and just turn it off or something so it doesn't conflict. I'm not worried about how much memory it uses or if it slows my computer down, because it will only be temporary. I'll uninstall it if I prefer one of the other two. Can this be done?

I would not immediately try out avira or avast. Use AVG8free a while and when you don't like it. you can still try out the other 2 programs. Make sure, that you uninstall AVG first, because you can't have two different antivirus programs on you pc. You can have more than one antispyware on your pc. It is even recommendable to have more than one.

There is something you might be able to do.

First of all, take into the count that the virus might be in your music. If you copy it to some other computer, the virus might go with it. Anyway, there is something u can do.

First, try to do some scan with other antivirus (AdWare, Norton, there are many choices) and see if it can fix the virus without doing anything to your music.

If that is not possible, then copy all of your music into a flash memory or an external hard drive and do a heavy virus exam afterwards, and then restart your computer.

I just bought Norton Anti-Virus from a store. I popped in the disk and I cannot download because the page is too big for the screen. In other words, I cannot view the bottom of the page and, henceforth, cannot click on the appropriate buttons to continue with the process. Can I make the page smaller to fit the screen? How?

You should change the resolution on your screen to allow more pixels. For example, if your windows display settings say that your resolution is 800X600 pixels, change it to 1024X768.

U should use one antivirus software as using two softwares will definitely reduce the processing speed of your computer. Your computer will take a very long time to reboot (restart). I suggest you better use AVG. U can choose to run a "Full Service Scan" online scan for viruses, spywares, trojans etc. on http://safety.live.com (Microsoft's newly launched website).

I have a content protection software, and it lags up my computer very badly. I contacted the techs and they wont help me out. The program is called Content protect 2.5 pro. When removeing in add/remove programs it asks for a password. I've tried running in safemode and removeing it but it still asks for a password. Once you open it, it takes a while appears to be doing nothing, a black screen appears/disappears then eventually a notepad window pops up with things with your system.

Na, firewall and virus protections can be gotten around. There would be far less infections if all computers had reboot and restore programs like DeepFreeze or Returnil. They work against almost any virus or spyware.

This happened to me as well and had me thinking I was going to have to format my HD! "Brave Sentry" is one part of a group of trojan-type spyware programs. DON'T buy it - it's a scam, a front program that will REALLY get you if you 'buy' anything.

Look for something online called "SmitfraudFix.exe" (you will find it at several reputable antivirus sites/forums) and download that along with the instructions on how to use it. It will completely remove the bug from your PC safely, and teach you how to prevent a reoccurrence.

you have to stop it from working in the back ground through the task manager once you have done that goto add and remove and remove all mcafee then find the mcafee folders and delete those you'll probably have some files that can't be deleted if you do go download a program called unlocker unlock the files and then delete them.

One option is goto start- run- regedit and remove anything that says mcaffee. this is dangerous if you dont pay attention, make sure that you read each line that your about to remove. Just do a search for mcaffee and then find next to move on to the next one. I can tell you from experience that you need to get comfortable and plan on removing threads for a couple hours. there are literly 100s of threads in regedit to remove.

I was unable to use my computer for 2 weeks because the old virus protection was taken off before norton was installed on 1/15/08. You can have as many hard disk drives as your motherboard and devices will support. Many systems have upwards of 8 drives.
yes it is possible but only if you have the right interface on your motherboard for your older drive.. for example if you old drive is IDE your new motherboard would have to have an IDE controller... most new computers use SATA as the interface for both hard drives and cd/dvd rom/writers....

Sure it's possible, but I can't say whether it's safe or not. I've done this to remove viruses in the past, but you risk having the virus spread to the other computer if you don't know what you are doing. It depends on how good your antivirus is.

I'm afraid I can't really comment further, other than stating that you can boot into Safe Mode with Networking on the infected computer to download and install removal software to attempt getting rid of the infection.

You could put the XP hard drive in the Vista PC, but I'm not sure it'll help with the virus. Seems like a lot of trouble to save $15. Hope this helps...

well, besides warning other people from going to that site, another way would probably be to contact them directly and tell them about this, or maybe report this to the admin people of the server where their site is hosted so that the admin can take down their site until the trojan is removed.

Personally, I can't understand why people hate it so much. I have had no problems with Vista except for compatibility issues that can easily be fixed by changing the compatibility mode in properties. Also, the only time I've had a noticeable virus on Windows was when I was on a XP computer, surfing the web with no anti-virus protection (I know, it wasn't a good idea but the computer was old and I didn't care). Also, I love Vista because it looks so good with Aero. Although, there are a few minor cons to the OP like slow startup and login times. Also, it is more of an eye candy upgrade than a function upgrade, but I expect Microsoft's next OP to have a lot more tools and functions. Ya, so do you like Windows or would you rather stay with XP? (Oh, PS I don't do much networking but my Vista PC, my mom's Vista PC and our XP PC all have a wireless network that was super easy to set up, no problems. We even share one printer) 8()

I have a Gateway desktop with an 80 gigabyte hard drive and Windows XP with a Service Pack 2 and I'm completely satisfied with it. Vista is too large and takes up too much room. I would rather use the extra room for more important stuff. I have AVG Free Edition which I downloaded myself and my Windows firewall is doing just fine. But that's just my opinion.
Microsoft Vista is starting to parallel the Ford Edsel in market acceptance. If they end of list Windows XP and try to force Vista on people, I'm moving over to Linux full time and so will about one third to one half of Microsoft's market.
vista is junk it was an "eye candy" up grade, when people choose pc's for function and compatibility which are vistas two main drawbacks, with no obvious pluses. For now we'll call it an OS, and XP is still the best, i fear buying any new gear.
First thing I do when I get a pc is change the theme to windows classic. Windows should just stick to being like it is we don't want flashy stuff in our way.

ok, so i know i have spyware or some kinda virus on my computer because all of a sudden these files were on my desktop for some bogus 'protection' program that i never installed on my computer. and it has an icon in my task manager and keeps popping up saying 'you have spyware on your computer, click hear to download software to remove it' and it links me to some site for antivirus/antispyware software.

i found on my computer a folder w/ program files in it that match up with the stuff that has been popping up and i can't delete the files. everytime i try to, my computer says 'can not delete (file name): It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again'

So I am pretty sure we are getting a mac computer and i am curious is the mac apple care protection plan worth all of the money. Its definitely a good thing, but it hasn't been as good as ive hoped it would be. I had some trouble with my 24inch white intel imac's superdrive, and i took it to my local authorized repair shop. No paperwork or anything was needed, but it took 3 weeks for the part to come in. Unfortunately they obviously didnt check that it worked afterwards, because it still was faulty and i had to wait another 2 weeks to get a second superdrive. Luckily the second one worked, but overall im disappointed with the service. Although, i think to my self, its not like i had any other option, its either the apple care protection plan or nothing, because i dont think you can get any third party warranties for apple stuff. BTW i live in brisbane australia, so that probably has something to do with the poor service i got, youd probably get better service in america.

Why does my laptop mysteriously turn off when i play Empire Earth... (read on)?

Here are my specs. My computer is a NEC M320 Versa and the game runs smooth as. I have zone alarm activated, updated virus protection, no viruses in my laptop or spyware, and it has all the windows updates. In short my laptop is secured.

I want to use a MacAfee firewall and Yahoo antivirus for my DSL. How can I get them to recognize each other and play nice? The online help said that old virus protection software had to be uninstalled before Yahoo could be installed so they wouldn't be essentially doing the same things at the same times and tying up the computer. We bought our computer a few months ago at Best Buy. Geek Squad installed everything we needed, including virus protection and firewalls. Since we have had the computer I have installed a few games from cd rom (purchased new at Best Buy the day we brought the computer home) Yahoo Messenger and Limewire. When I download music from Limewire I put the songs into my flash MP3 player and delete the downloads from my computer.

I have noticed in the past two or three weeks that I get the dreaded Blue Screen almost everyday where as the first three months we had the computer this never happened.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it possible that Geek Squad did something when they loaded everything that would make it to where this would happen so that we would have no choice but to take it back to them and pay out the A$$ to fix it?

Got any suggestions? We also have a laptop with all the same programs and it dosen't do this. Both were purchased at the same time.

I suspect malicious code of some sort, either a virus or spyware, even though I have not heard of either of them causing the BSOD (blue screen of death). Run an antivirus scan and a spyware scan of your system while it's in safe mode with system restore turned off. If the scans come back clean, reboot and see if the BSOD is gone. Most DVD software on computers make you choose a region when you first play a DVD...if it worked the first time, the region for that DVD could have been made default. You have a limited number of times you can change the region. Based on the limited information you provided, that may be the case..don't know what region you are or what region DVD you're trying to play.

As for the sound card problem, if you can hear sound normally on your computer, then you should reinstall interactiveactual if you want to use it to play DVDs.
You could use PowerDVD 7. It opens dvds and has the highest quality you cound need!

In most video editing programmes there is a facility to add protection to your discs at the output/produce stage, I don't think this is what you are looking for however as this protection is to prevent unauthorised copying, I haven't heard of any protection of the type you are describing. However, like everything else, there is a way round this. When you burn your finished disc DO NOT Finalise it. Then the disk will ONLY play in the burner/drive that made it. My computer has recently decided not to recognize any portable media devices. I have an iRiver H10 that has worked fine for the last 2 years, now it isn't recognized. My sister has an iPod nano, now that doesn't work. I just bought a Zune, and, you guessed it, not recognized. It's kind of recognized because when the software installed it asked me to hook the zune up to my computer and it knew it was there. I can't stop AVG virus scan when I want. HELP!?

I bought AVG Internet Protection today and started scanning. Its taking longer than expected. I have to be somewhere in about an hour. I tried to stop the virus scan(it not anywhere

close to being done) but I can't. I press the "Stop" button,

select "Yes" in the scan cancellation window but it just keeps on scanning. I can't exit either because I get a window that says "Another Operation is in progress and I can't exit until its finished". Any ideas? If you are not able to stop the scan from control center. Dont click the close button on right top of the window. On the bottom right there is a button stop. You press it and then click yes. Scan will stop. If this doesnt work ...

Do the following. When the scan is in progress. You open the task manager(ctrl+alt+del), Then in the application list select the avg program running, Right click on that application and click. "go to process". And then click "end process", Now you press "yes". The scan will stop and the avg control center will be closed.

MALWARE ALARM- do i have it or not?

Yesterday my cuz was browsing a normally safe site when a safe link made a popup came up (although we hav blocked all popups).

It said 'Your computer may have a potential virus- download malware protection now'. She exited it, but it took her onto a website and began downloading itself. She exited internet explorer before it finished but i've heard this is a very clever virus so i doubt that closing it did anything.

The website is called scanner.malware-scan.exe. Our laptop seems fine tho. No humming, i can still save, but im using firefox instead of xplorer.. However access to my cookies is 'denied.'

I would like to know if this is real or a hoax. After seeing 1 guy's screenshots on his malware blog, my cuz says that happened to her. but i ran spyware doctor, and super-antispware... nothin. i heard this virus can lie dormant for weeks and THEN kick in.

How can I tell when you haven't mentioned your hardware configuration? Your software package is thumping good, but it's the hardware that will decide the speed of your system. If you are not making it a gaming computer, then 512 MB RAM and at least a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz will do fine.
The important part is not what pieces of hardware you have in it. All you did there was list all the components of a computer which you will need. The important part is buying high quality and fast components.

Oh and don't worry, even if you weren't getting a discount, if you do this right it should be exponentially cheaper than a purchased pre-made computer.
