I just switched from dial-up modem to a cable modem (yeh I know, I'm way behind times). For security reasons, should I install a router on my computer, and if so, what would you recommend ? I do have virus protection and a firewall. Thanks.

A router is not necessary unless you want to share your Internet connection with other computers in your home or office. Another reason to have a router is to utilize the hardware firewall, that can have more control and protection than software firewalls. That depends on the software though. Some of them have a lot of control and protection options built in.
While there are many routers available, one that I have found to be the easiest to set up and control is LinkSys WRT54GS. It includes both wired and wireless connection options.
Do I Need a Router ?kawasaki
A router is only used if you want to connect several computers to the same internet service.
If you have good virus/firewall protection, I don't think you need anything else, but make sure your anti-virus also has anti-spyware. If not, I would suggest getting one (there's plenty of good, free ones).
Your software firewall should do it, but a small router will not hurt at all.
Shouldn't need a router in this case. The router is usually used when you need to have multiple computer to connect through one internet gateway. You are right in that there are additional security measures with a router, but these can be accomplished through firewall solutions (with the exception of IP masking, which shouldn't be too big of a deal).
If you do need two or more computers to connect to the internet, then I would definitely recommend a router.
