Question about Norton anti virus?

We bought the Norton anti virus package at a retail store, and loaded it to the computer about a year ago. This box popped up and said we needed to renew it or we wouldn't have any protection. It costs around between $29.99 to $59.99 is this legit? Is this how I should upgrade or renew? Or is this bad? Thanks so much, I don't know much about computers.

If you get Java, then you never have to renew

then if you have Norton Anti Virus, you renew it every year
