Here are my specs. My computer is a NEC M320 Versa and the game runs smooth as. I have zone alarm activated, updated virus protection, no viruses in my laptop or spyware, and it has all the windows updates. In short my laptop is secured.

but when i play battle realms, or empire earth... it just shuts down after 10 minutes after opening the application... what can be wrong with my laptop... before i had so many software installed i could still play games but it's acting wierd.

Sometimes that happens when Windows encounters a certain bug. Windows is configured to automatically shutdown if certain errors occur in games. To turn off this feature open up your explorer and click on Control Panel, then click on System, when the System properties menu pops up click on the tab at the top labeled Advanced. Once there, click on the Settings button under the sub-category Startup and Recovery. There should be a category in there that says System Failure. A check box that says "Automatically restart" should be unchecked to prevent your computer from cutting off.

If this doesn't help, you may need to check the temperature of your laptop. If while you're playing the game you realize that the laptop is getting hot, make sure the fans aren't blocked and if they aren't, a secondary cooling source, such as an ordinary oscillating fan, may be necessary. Laptops are designed to shut down when they reach a certain temperature to try to prevent data corruption which happens at extreme temperatures of about 115 - 125 degrees F. Sometimes even 105 - 110 degrees F.

I want to use a MacAfee firewall and Yahoo antivirus for my DSL. How can I get them to recognize each other and play nice? The online help said that old virus protection software had to be uninstalled before Yahoo could be installed so they wouldn't be essentially doing the same things at the same times and tying up the computer. But I don't have MacAfee antivirus, just the firewall, so Yahoo antivirus shouldn't be impeded. How can I make this work?

We bought our computer a few months ago at Best Buy. Geek Squad installed everything we needed, including virus protection and firewalls. Since we have had the computer I have installed a few games from cd rom (purchased new at Best Buy the day we brought the computer home) Yahoo Messenger and Limewire. When I download music from Limewire I put the songs into my flash MP3 player and delete the downloads from my computer.

I have noticed in the past two or three weeks that I get the dreaded Blue Screen almost everyday where as the first three months we had the computer this never happened.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it possible that Geek Squad did something when they loaded everything that would make it to where this would happen so that we would have no choice but to take it back to them and pay out the A$$ to fix it?

Got any suggestions? We also have a laptop with all the same programs and it dosen't do this. Both were purchased at the same time.

I suspect malicious code of some sort, either a virus or spyware, even though I have not heard of either of them causing the BSOD (blue screen of death). Run an antivirus scan and a spyware scan of your system while it's in safe mode with system restore turned off. If the scans come back clean, reboot and see if the BSOD is gone. Most DVD software on computers make you choose a region when you first play a DVD...if it worked the first time, the region for that DVD could have been made default. You have a limited number of times you can change the region. Based on the limited information you provided, that may be the case..don't know what region you are or what region DVD you're trying to play.

As for the sound card problem, if you can hear sound normally on your computer, then you should reinstall interactiveactual if you want to use it to play DVDs.
You could use PowerDVD 7. It opens dvds and has the highest quality you cound need!

In most video editing programmes there is a facility to add protection to your discs at the output/produce stage, I don't think this is what you are looking for however as this protection is to prevent unauthorised copying, I haven't heard of any protection of the type you are describing. However, like everything else, there is a way round this. When you burn your finished disc DO NOT Finalise it. Then the disk will ONLY play in the burner/drive that made it. My computer has recently decided not to recognize any portable media devices. I have an iRiver H10 that has worked fine for the last 2 years, now it isn't recognized. My sister has an iPod nano, now that doesn't work. I just bought a Zune, and, you guessed it, not recognized. I bought AVG Internet Protection today and started scanning. Its taking longer than expected. I have to be somewhere in about an hour. I tried to stop the virus scan(it not anywhere

If you are not able to stop the scan from control center. Dont click the close button on right top of the window. On the bottom right there is a button stop. You press it and then click yes. Scan will stop. If this doesnt work ...

Do the following. When the scan is in progress. You open the task manager(ctrl+alt+del), Then in the application list select the avg program running, Right click on that application and click. "go to process". And then click "end process", Now you press "yes". The scan will stop and the avg control center will be closed.

Yesterday my cuz was browsing a normally safe site when a safe link made a popup came up (although we hav blocked all popups).

It said 'Your computer may have a potential virus- download malware protection now'. She exited it, but it took her onto a website and began downloading itself. She exited internet explorer before it finished but i've heard this is a very clever virus so i doubt that closing it did anything.

The website is called scanner.malware-scan.exe. Our laptop seems fine tho. No humming, i can still save, but im using firefox instead of xplorer.. However access to my cookies is 'denied.'

I would like to know if this is real or a hoax. After seeing 1 guy's screenshots on his malware blog, my cuz says that happened to her. but i ran spyware doctor, and super-antispware... nothin. i heard this virus can lie dormant for weeks and THEN kick in.

How can I tell when you haven't mentioned your hardware configuration? Your software package is thumping good, but it's the hardware that will decide the speed of your system. If you are not making it a gaming computer, then 512 MB RAM and at least a Pentium 4 2.8 GHz will do fine.
The important part is not what pieces of hardware you have in it. All you did there was list all the components of a computer which you will need. The important part is buying high quality and fast components.

Oh and don't worry, even if you weren't getting a discount, if you do this right it should be exponentially cheaper than a purchased pre-made computer.

I've been having problems with my computer lately (crashings, programs working incorrectly, problems online, etc) and downloaded SuperAntiSpyWare as I heard on here that it's the best program for virus protection, often catching things that other programs missed (none of these viruses came up on AVG). I found several trojans (painter, spysheriff, balloon, adwaresheriff, systray/exbr) and have now quarantined them. So my question is - what next? Is my computer safe or is there more that I need to be doing? And if so, what?

you should always have at least 2 spyware/adware scanners to remove things. certain prgograms detect certain things that others bypass. i have a few cleanup and program suggestions. choose whichever you like. your computer safety programs might not be the safest depending on what they are. but i can guarentee my suggestions are safe. cleaning up your computer can make it run faster. also go to the start menu, then go to RUN, then type msconfig and choose the startup and you can enable or disable certain programs from starting when you boot your computer. but here are my suggestions:

*AVG is not as reliable as AVAST go to http://download.com and download it (search for Avast home) dont register it and when the demo is up, just uninstall it and reinstall it. it also helps because if you download a bad file from limewire or the internet, it alerts you immediately so you can delete it right away. certain AVG programs will be charging for updates soon and thats not good if you cant pay for them you ushould always keep your antivirus up to date. keep Avast home edition open in your toolbar at all times. it moniters alot of potentially harmful things its really great. if you dont have firewall i suggest downloading Zonealarm (which is free) and if you need antispyware, download Spybot search and destroy and superantispyware free edition

My family got wireless internet and being the people they are they didn't put any protection up. I set up the WPA key, and used my laptop as the guinea pig (there is one other laptop in the house). Ever since then, I haven't been able to get onto the internet via my family's network.

We removed the WPA key, and it still wont work. My laptop picks up other signals and connects to them all the time (I use it at college AND my bfs house with No problems) yet for some reason it wont allow me to use the internet in my house!

Any ideas? There are things on my computer I'd like to use that my family doesn't have installed or want installed on their computers. Any idea what's wrong?

Are you sure you are entering the WAP key correctly? Try changing the encryption and protocol. Keep it at 128bit, but there should be couple different ones.

Make sure you have at least 3 open ports for all of your computers.

Try going to the access restrictions list on your router while other computer is running, and you should be able to locate computer's MAC address, and add it to ALLOW list. I'm not sure which router you have so I can't tell you what exactly you should do.

Some WAPs need to be rebooted for the changes to take effect.... I know Linksys and Netgear were good for this.... Why not try to reboot the AP and then try to connect to it once again....

I can attach files in my Yahoo Mail no problem. But my wife's Yahoo Mail account can't. Whenever she tries, she gets:

At first,boot your computer in safe mode,uninstall all the new

program which you have install before your problem have

started(like virus scan,as you mentioned),boot in normal mode,if your PC again do not work properly,then for the second time,boot in safe mode,restore your computer on the date on which it was working fine(i will suggest one or two days before it was working well),again boot in normal mode.

Try right-clicking on the file that is on your computer and selecting the properties menu item. If write protected is shaded in click on the box until it is blank.
That sounds like an issue on your PC more than the MP3 Player. Try making a new folder on your computer.

If you can make a new folder then copy the files to that folder.

also right click on the destination folder and check the properties for it. Read AND write should both have checkmarks next to them.

Laptop decisions?

I am in need of a laptop but not very sure where to start. It needs to be easy to use and have easy clean up/virus protection. I do not really play games or watch movies on a computer. I do however do graphic design so a fast precessor would be a need. Weight can't be too heavy. It needs to be one that will last for a while once i am finished with school, so durability and longevity need to match up with the price. I would go with a Mac, for a few reasons. You say you do graphic design, and Mac computers are pretty much made for graphic design/photography, and things like that. Also, they can't (so they say) get viruses on them, so you wouldn't have to worry about getting them. You can go to apple.com and look around at the laptops, which they call MacBooks. The site is really helpful, and you can even talk to someone about it on that site if you have any questions.

I use SBCglobal internet. My popup blocker, i'm guessing, is a sbc one. I turn it on by going up to tools, internet options, and then Privacy where I turn the popup or cookie blocker at whatever setting I want. But heres where the problem comes. Your computer may be over crowded with things that shouldn't be on there. Also if you have millions of downloads this will cause your game to slow down and possibly not even work at all.

Anyway, you know how when you sign in to SBC-Yahoo, they have this ad "Get Protected, get yer super duper secret site key computer ID, ooga booga mumbo jumbo, click here to find out how." Been there, done that.

So I go to enter my user ID and tab down to enter my password, and every freaking time, while I'm typing my password, the cursor jumps back up to the user ID field and shows some of the letters of the password I just typed, for everyone to see that's looking over my shoulder or for some computer hack, I don't know. They can't even get the sign-in procedure right yet the want to "protect" me with their fool proof (yeah, right) sign in programs. Oooooooh. And don't even get me started on Norton Antivirus. That software is like municipal waste --it ought to be flushed.

So here's my question: This whole password protection is just a whole bunch of hooey, isn't it?

The problem is that the SBC Yahoo page takes an unusual amount of time to completely and fully load. As soon as it does load completely, it will highlight the user id field. The site is not https%26lt;- Notice the s for secure, until the page fully loads. That is why some of your password is visible. Go to the page, wait like 10 seconds (or how ever long it takes for the cursor to start blinking in the user id field, and then put the info in.

A small electronic item I would recommend is the Nintendo DS - my daughter uses hers all the time. What is really nice is she can use it at home and she can also use it if we travel. Animal Crosing and MySims are two popular games that go with it as are any of the Mario games.

If she is into music I would suggest an IPOD if she doesn't already have one. My daughter has a cell phone and her own computer but she definitely loves her IPOD.. of course to download songs from itunes she'll end up using your computer. i have a dell computer with vista home premium on it. It sounds like Norton 360 is on high alert and doesn't like any sort of internet activity.

Personally, I can't recommend any particular settings for Norton; however, will recommend that you don't spend money on Norton again.

There are a few free anti-virus applications on the net that do just as good (if not, better) job than Norton. Including Avast and AVG.

Try un-installing Norton and using the net. If it works fine, give Avast a go. Download and install it and take Norton back to the store if you're quite happy with Avast (and your internet's working fine).

Someone just gave my niece a computer running 98SE (old I know)...but they have Malware Removal Tool, Spyware Terminator, Spyware Blaster, Ccleaner, RegCure (unregistered), Spybot-Search %26 Destroy as running programs left on it. IMO, you should get rid of a few, at least Spyware Blaster, RegCure, Malware removal, and possibly even Spyware terminator. As long as the other programs are up to date, you don't need that many running. With an older OS they're just going to slow it down.

I would be very careful in removing any of them. I run a legacy computor on 98SE and made the mistake of removing my GriSoft AVG before checking the new version. So now that is no longer protecting the PC. Many of the programs above have later versions which will run only on XP and newer, so be careful. More important is running, regularly, Norton WinDoctor which can find spyware loaded into registry. Keep C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files empty after each session, as well you should empty C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Recent, C:\WINDOWS\Recent, C:\WINDOWS\TEMP, on a regular basis, as many spyware programs place in them as well. Also clear C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5, leaving the index file alone. Hope this helps.
Stick with them all. Run each update and scan separately to keep safe.

I'm looking for a program that can run with the autorun.inf of a hard drive/memory stick which would open a simple tiny protection program against opening specific files/folders on that hard drive? for example, say i turn on the hard drive, and the computer reads the autorun.inf file and runs the protection file. I browse over to "Z:\asdf\private" and I get a little message box telling me that I need a password to access this folder (same thing goes for a file: "Z:\asdf\file.exe")

And also, protection against accessing the folders/files it from MS-DOS.

Is there a program that is ALMOST AS EQUIVALENT (if not exactly the same) as to what I want?

When I log on my computer I get this message every time for the past few months. "16 bit windows subsystem - An application has attempted to directly access the hard disk, which cannot be supported. This may cause the application to function incorrectly, chose close to terminate the application." Then it gives two choices "close" or "ignore". I've clicked on both choices at different times with no difference in effect. I obviously don't understand what is causing this and how to stop it. This is an older Compaq Presario 344mhz? 10 gig 128RAM Windows XP Professional Operating System. It is quite slow, I'm on dial up. I plan on replacing it soon. I have a routine weekly schedual to run updates from Microsoft, AVG Free Edition virus protection, AdAware6 free edition, I'm not sure if this is successful? I recently purchased and ran RegCure, it found thousands of things to fix, things do run a little faster now. However, this 16 bit windows subsystem message continues.

This is a program written for an older version of windows trying to access hardware directly, bypassing the HAL. This may be a virus or malware, or could just be a program that was installed at some point in the past. I would recommend backing up your data and running the Restore disk for your computer. A clean reinstall of windows should take care of it.

If the computer shuts down while you are using it check the CPU fan, because as a safety feature most computers are set to shut down if the CPU overheats. Firewall problem...?

Okay so here it goes. I recently purchased a firewall off the website e-trust. Now, I am a student at college so all the firewall protection is already installed up there and my computer now, already has a firewall on it from windows. I'm thinking about deleting the whole program but cannot seem to do it. I go to the control panel to uninstall the program and it says "you do not have sufficient privileges to install or uninstall CA Personal Firewall." Try logging on as the administrator. I am the administrator on my computer, or atleast I thought I was. Any help?

Your best bet would be to get some kind of parental control so that he can't get on to those sites. I'm sorry, I can't think of where to get them from. Good Luck!
You need to give your son his own log-in/password and then put parental controls onto it. You need XP or Vista. You can then control the sites he can visit and also you will have access to a list of sites he's been to, in case he finds a way around it. At 15 though, how long can you or should you keep him away - that's not a question I can or want to answer! So, if he's going to do it anyway then you need to update your virus files every day, not just occassionally. Those people out there writing virus code are doing it at an alarming rate and there's something new almost every day.
If he goes on the site again, your software will hopefully catch the virus before it can download onto your computer, and you should get a message saying that it stopped a virus from dowloading, or it will pick it up on a scan and most likely be able to delete it.
keep the anti viruses downloaded on your computer and that should keep it safe. A trojan is a specific type of virus. Tell him not to go on porn and talk to him. Get Mcafee Security Center, and have a virus scan from Norton scan your PC every week for viruses.

You can be assured that if you bought the laptop brand new from the store it has a wireless card already installed. However you can check this out by going to your local library, or coffee shop, make sure your wifi switch is turned on, and all of a sudden at the bottom of your screen, you will see a message saying 'wireless networks available' or something of that nature. Also for security, go into your router that is installed on your other computer, and go to settings, you should see a column for security, choose either wep or wpa, wpa is more secure, but some routers only support wep so check the router manual for this. Enable wep or wpa, change the name if you wish, and choose your password. Make sure its a password that NO ONE could guess even if they tried. It is recommended that you use letters and numbers for more security. As far as using public networks, I believe the only thing you can do is enable your firewall, and something like norton would help. It IS yet in the little lock on/off slider on the card, but they're sometimes pretty critical. Make sure it's all the way to the "off" position and that it STAYS there. Sometimes they slide a little bit back when inserting the card and that may be enough. There's also a slight possibility of a failure in the card reader but that's not very likely

If you have AVG, it would have detected and prevented you from downloading a virus. I've had it for 12 years without ever having a virus once and have done plenty of surfing (if you know what I mean)!

It is highly unlikely that the person put a virus on your computer. I would, however, always suggest along with AVG antivirus, you download a dedicated spyware remover. AVG antispyware or Spyware Doctor Starter Edition will clean your pc of the spyware on your computer which is much more likely to infect your pc than viruses. Both are free and available on download.com

Also download CCleaner which will remove tracking cookies, temporary files,etc. from your pc. It is also free and a very handy utility.

As a final precaution you can run an online scan with Trend Micro HouseCall to remove any additional malware.

When I put my computer on stand by or when im using it for about 2 hours. A blue screen pops up saying computer shut down to save itself from injuring itself. Then when i restart my virus protection program, it says That system32 tried to do a buffer overload. Along with the crashes several pop ups come that my blockers cant block. Needless to say, I deleted all of the living screensavers that I downloaded from freeze.com.

Yea i agree that the background is a bit dull and the font should be updated to a more modern easier to read font. Also the current layout is a long list, you should probably compact it a little like having 2 columns.

Ok, so I've had Windows Vista for a while, but it's really starting to get annoying. When I try to movie files or folders from one place to another it says I need to provide permission, so I do, and then a second screen comes up and says continue or cancel. I click continue, and then it brings up a third message that says access denied?!?!?!?!?! WHY is access denied? Why can't I move pictures, movies, and vids from one place to another? I can't do it by copy and pasting, cutting and pasting, or dragging and dropping. Is there someway to turn this message off so I can move my files to where I'd like to move them? I just feel that when I have pictures, videos, and music, on my computer they should go in those folders, not on the desktop. I'm not trying to move to the Program Files folder or anything. Actually it's easier to move viruses to the Program Files folder than it is to move a picture to the pictures folder. Anyone know how to turn this stupid protection off?

There isn't any need to switch to Kaspersky anti-virus as Avast! Home edition is good enough. Just make sure to keep Avast!, Windows Defender and Comodo active and updated all the time. You can also use the free McAfee Site Advisor plug-in for your browser (IE and Firefox), it will warn you of bad sites:

I have purched the Norton Internet software last year to help with blocking bad web sites as well as what other things it offers me.

When I load it in the computer to start using the product it said put in key # I did and the log in ok.

I log in and connect to the net the icon comes up that says I am connected.

It says to log in again ok. even though th icon says I am connected to the net the Security want let me even check my e-mail; I am afarid to buy the 2007 addition for fear I will be wasting my money.
